Compressed springs and stretched rubber bands are examples of stored mechanical energy. Chemical energy is stored in the bonds that connect atoms with other atoms and molecules with other molecules. Because chemical energy is stored, it is a form of potential energy.

When a chemical reaction takes place, the stored chemical energy is released. When we eat food, our bodies convert the stored energy, known as Calories, to chemical energy, thereby allowing us to do work. Energy is actually stored in your liver and muscle cells and readily available as glycogen. We know this as carbohydrate energy. When carbohydrate energy is needed, glycogen is converted into glucose for use by the muscle cells. Another source of fuel for the body is protein, but is rarely a significant source of fuel.

In circumstances in which you have all of the glucose your body needs and your glycogen stores are full, your body can convert excess carbohydrates into triglyceride molecules and store them as fat. Carbohydrates are the main energy source of the human diet. The metabolic disposal of dietary carbohydrates is direct oxidation in various tissues, glycogen synthesis in liver and muscles , and hepatic de novo lipogenesis. We use it every day, we have it in our bodies and some of it comes from other planets! Energy can never be made or destroyed, but its form can be converted and changed. For example, the chemical energy we get from our food turns into kinetic and thermal energy see below when we walk and sound energy when we shout.

Kinetic - Anything that moves has this kind of energy. To run, cycle, climb and move the mouse for a computer we use kinetic energy. Radiant - Radiant energy means light. Examples of things that have radiant energy are the Sun, lightbulbs and our computer screens. Plants convert light energy into chemical energy food which helps them to grown, this is known as photosynthesis.

Sound - The louder we shout the more sound energy we are using. Apart from our voices there are plenty of other examples of sound energies - guitars have sound energy when plucked using kinetic energy. Sound energy is the movement of energy through a substance in waves. Vibrations are what cause sound energy. Primary energy sources take many forms, including nuclear energy, fossil energy — like oil, coal and natural gas — and renewable sources like wind, solar, geothermal and hydropower.

There are several types of calorimeters but the main emphasis of all calorimeters is to insulate the reaction to prevent heat loss. We will be using a homemade calorimeter modeled after a constant-volume calorimeter. A particular food item will be ignited, the homemade calorimeter will trap the heat of the burning food, and the water above will absorb the heat, thereby causing the temperature T of the water to increase.

In this experiment, you will measure the amount of energy available for use from three types of nuts, a plant product. This process of measuring the energy stored in food is known as calorimetry.
